Questions, answered

What is the best free crochet pattern generator?

It depends on what you are making. For flat colorwork from an image or text, MotifSmith is free to use online without an account and gives a chart, row-by-row counts and a yarn estimate. For 3D toys or garments, no generator is reliable yet, so use a tested pattern from a designer.

How to choose a generator

How do I turn a picture into a crochet pattern?

Simplify the picture, choose how many stitches wide you want it, limit it to 4 to 8 colors, then convert it to a graph where each cell is one stitch. MotifSmith does the conversion in your browser: choose an image, set the size, and follow the chart row by row.

Can ChatGPT write a crochet pattern?

It can draft one, but check every stitch count before you start, because language models predict text rather than count stitches and often produce rows that do not add up. For colorwork charts, an algorithm is more dependable, since every cell maps to exactly one stitch.

What AI gets right and wrong

Does MotifSmith use AI?

No. Charts are made by a color-matching algorithm that runs in your browser, so the same image and settings always give the same chart. The starter designs in the gallery, labeled MotifSmith Originals, began as AI-drawn images that were then converted by this same algorithm.

How do you make a filet crochet name pattern?

Draw the name on a grid where each square is either open or filled, then work it in mesh. In MotifSmith, choose Text on the filet crochet generator, type the name, and adjust the size until the letters look clean. Names usually read well at 15 to 25 rows tall.

How do you read a filet crochet chart?

Start at the bottom row, and treat each square as one mesh block: an open square is chain 2, skip 2, double crochet 1, and a filled square is 3 double crochet (US terms). Work odd rows right to left and even rows left to right.

How do you read a crochet graph?

Each cell is one stitch in the color shown. Work from the bottom row up. When working flat, read odd rows right to left and even rows left to right, and change yarn wherever the color changes.

How much yarn do I need for a crochet blanket?

A 50 by 60 inch throw in worsted-weight single crochet takes roughly 2,900 yards, including a 15% margin. The amount changes with yarn weight, stitch and tension, so use a calculator for your own size and make a swatch before buying.

How big will my crochet graph turn out?

Divide the stitches by your stitches per inch, and the rows by your rows per inch. A 100 by 120 graph at 3.25 stitches and 3.9 rows per inch comes out about 31 by 31 inches. Measure a swatch to get your own numbers.

What is the difference between C2C, tapestry and filet crochet?

Tapestry crochet carries several colors through rows of single crochet. C2C (corner to corner) builds diagonally in small blocks, one color per block. Filet crochet uses one yarn and makes the picture from open and filled mesh squares.

Which technique to choose

How many stitches and colors should a crochet chart have?

Start around 50 stitches wide and 4 to 8 colors. Simple shapes work at 30 to 50 stitches, while detailed pictures need 80 or more. Each extra color adds yarn changes, so use the fewest that keep the image recognizable.

Can I make a crochet pattern from a photo of a cartoon character?

You can make one for private use in many places, but characters are protected by copyright and trademark, so selling the pattern or finished items can infringe. Do not publish them to the MotifSmith gallery. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are my images private on MotifSmith?

Yes. Images are processed in your browser and are never uploaded. Only the finished chart is saved when you download it, and it becomes public only if you choose to publish it.

Can MotifSmith make amigurumi or sweater patterns?

No. It makes flat colorwork charts, such as blankets, pillow panels, wall hangings and bags. It does not write shaping instructions for 3D toys or garments.

Can I sell things I make from MotifSmith patterns?

Yes. You may sell finished items made from your own patterns or from gallery patterns. Do not resell other people’s charts or MotifSmith Originals as patterns, and make sure you have the rights to any image you start from.
