How filet crochet charts work
Filet crochet makes a picture from a grid of mesh. Each square in the chart is either open or filled, so there are no color changes to manage, only one yarn. A common way to work it: an open square is chain 2, skip 2, double crochet 1, and a filled square is 3 double crochet.
High contrast works best. Names, silhouettes and simple motifs read clearly; gradients and faces usually don’t. If your picture looks backwards, use “Swap open and filled squares”.
Sizing your project
The final size depends on your yarn and hook. A name fits well on a table runner or a banner about 15 to 25 rows tall, while a blanket panel may need 80 rows or more. Crochet a small swatch first, measure a few squares, then multiply.
